Identities: Applying Feminism factsheet

1) Briefly list or describe the different waves of feminism.
The first wave of feminism surfaced as a result of the Suffragette movement in the late 19th century.

2) The factsheet doesn't mention a fourth wave of feminism. Do you think we are currently in a fourth wave of feminism due to digital media?
I think that feminism has progressed in a way that has never been seen before, insofar as the relationship between people in positions of power and media consumers has become much more public and intimate thanks to social media. Therefore, in terms of feminism, these two groups of people are able to fight together and form a bond, creating a sense of belonging to a community. 20 years ago, women could indeed come together and provide mutual support for one another but the chances of them being able to connect with someone like Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton at the time wouldn't have been strong. However now, Michelle Obama who is one of the most significant feminist icons in history has Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram, platforms through which she can be contacted by women of all ages and backgrounds and can respond to them, offering her own support. Therefore I do think that we have entered a fourth wave of feminism as a result of digital media.

3) List the five different types of feminism with a one-sentence definition for each.
Radical feminism - Radical feminists strongly believe that men are the only cause of female oppression and they do it purely for their own personal benefit.
Liberal feminism suggests that biology shouldn't be used as a means of determining gender roles in society and it fights to ensure that children aren't forced into societal roles depending on their gender.
Marxist-feminism considers that women are oppressed as a result of capitalism and the class system, in that capitalism has always historically placed women at home working for 'free'.
Black feminism primarily focuses on the oppression received by black and Asian women as a result of racism, capitalism and patriarchy.
Postmodern feminism encourages women that they don't have to conform to one subsidiary of feminism, but rather they are free to combine feminist ideologies in an effort to create a brand of feminism that they can best identify with.

4) Summarise Laura Mulvey's analysis of Hollywood film.

5) What does Jean Kilbourne argue regarding advertising and the impact on women?

6) Summarise Naomi Wolf's theory of 'The Beauty Myth'.

7) List the texts discussed in the section 'feminism and music videos'. Do you believe that the representation of women in music videos can have an impact on how people behave in real life?

8) To conclude feminism, do you believe than men and women are basically equal now or is there still a need for feminist movements?

I do think that there has definitely been a significant development in gender equality
